Wayne rubs shoulders with royalty at Buckingham Palace

A FORMER Bolton man has been the Queen's guest at Buckingham Palace.

Deane Grammar School old-boy Wayne McIntosh rubbed shoulders with royalty after being invited to a VIP reception in London on Tuesday.

Only 40 people were at the evening reception for the British hospitality industry, which was hosted by the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh.

The 42-year-old said: "It was amazing, I spoke to the Queen about what I do and she seemed genuinely interested.

"It was an honour to be invited."

Celebrity chef Gordon Ramsey also made an appearance on the night.

Mr McIntosh used to work at the Octagon Theatre but is now a Law and Social Sciences associate lecturer at The University of Plymouth and his invite follows research for his PhD into tourism and crime.

He has focused on holiday and residential parks in the South West and has studied the level of crime and fear of crime experienced by tourists and residents using static caravans.

Mr McIntosh thought it was a joke when he received the invitation to Buckingham Palace. He said: "I was convinced it was a practical joke.

"It is a fairly big honour to be invited to an evening reception rather than a garden party as there are often for hundreds of people and only a few select people get to actually meet the Queen.

"At the evening receptions, there is much more opportunity for one to one conversations."

The event was one of a number of receptions the Queen hosts during the year for different sectors of society.
