Cahill praises Reebok spirit
GARY Cahill put the case for the defence last night as Wanderers prepared to turn Sunday's Stamford Bridge swansong into a survival celebration.
The young centre-back believes strength of character and the enforcement of Gary Megson's back-to-basics philosophy are behind the Great Escape.
Relegation favourites a month ago, Wanderers go to Chelsea on Sunday all-but safe, and Cahill says the entire squad and the management team deserve credit for responding so impressively in the face of adversity after the 4-0 defeat at Aston Villa.
"Four weeks ago it was a very sticky patch, especially coming back from that result at Villa," he said.
"But you've seen the character of the lads when the pressure was on - and there really is a lot of pressure on when you're in the bottom three and things are looking very, very bleak.
"Some people don't realise the pressure the lads are under, especially when you're where we are, but we've tried to keep our spirits high and it's not been that hard coming into training.
"Nevertheless, turning it round and getting three wins and a draw - a crucial draw - at Tottenham, has been a fantastic response.
"The manager, the staff and the players have to take all the credit for that. We needed the big players to come to the front and that's what we've done."

Well done Gary, for a 22 year old lad you have played really well and shown a great deal of maturity.
My pick for Captain next season.

Great effort by the team to come back from the Villa debacle and the Arsenal set back, it is up to the club now to take this golden opportunity to spend big (£25 million +) and use it as a platform to stay in the premier league for the next 5 years upwards.

Put your tin hats on & put your best foot forward it's going to be a 90 minute battle & barrage of attack. But they are a bunch of Southern Bufties - Good Luck BWFC & hold firm.

You should now be made to change your name to billy1mate.
I guess your right about the Nolan statement, that thought never occured to me about what he has done in the dressing room, for me though there is only one true captain and that would be Iron man Davies

First time on forum since Saturday. Still recovering. Was done deliberately didn't want anyone being negative and spoiling the achievement.
Not looked any further than this post and things seem to be quite cheery up to now.
Must give the lads a big pat on the back and some credit must go to Megson for coming in and doing what had to be done.Perhaps now we can sort ourselves out for next season.
Was at the match but recorded it and must say Nolan spoke to every member of the team in the tunnel and to me is an excellent captain

Anyone got any suggestions of new signings for next season..
As stated a couple of weeks ago Danny murphy is out of contract at fulham.. if they go down i think he should be a target for us. He plays football the 'correct' way, picks out passes, scores goals, and not shy to get stuck in, could be just what were looking for in midfield.
Most of you probably wont agree with this but i trust Megson to make some good additions in the summer, His january signings of Cahill, Steinsson, Taylor have all been excellent, Rasiak and cohen maybe not, but they didnt cost hardly any money.

Just to tell all you Gartside haters.
On Saturday I was talking to some of the Lancaster whites,
They told me Gartside often goes to the their meetings up in Lancaster ,and they say he his a great bloke.
One of them contacted the club complaining about the free travel to Chelsea.
A little later the club contacted them and said just send the travel invoice to Mr Gartside and he will foot the bill.
The side of Gartside most fans never get to see.
The man lives and breaths BWFC.
Get off his back.
Lets see what he comes up with in the close season to help Megson build his own team.
Then judge Megson after that .
One or three of his signings in January wernt bad.
Just hope Taylor can reach his obvious potential.

I think if Megson is still here next season we have to trust him and give him all support after all he did the job he was brought in to do. Really hope we can bring a good striker. suppose we will be getting letters for our season tickets now!

to be fair nolan's has looked more of a captain recently. he's had a shocker of a season though. missed alot of goal scoring opportunities this year.

davie - good to hear the points on Gartside.
Although not to sure yet on Megson I do think we could have a much worse chairman than Gartside. Afraid his comments on Allardyce did him no favours but he was disappointed that Sam was leaving and sure he has the clubs interest at heart

Thinking about strikers... we could prob do with at least two if not three for next season, Megson doesn't fancy Helguson or vaz te and if im honest i'd have to agree that both of the above aren't upto prem standard. Anelka gone, dioufy on his way out. Hopefully Rasiak on his way back to southampton. Sop that leaves us with................ er..............erm.
.............. Kevin Davies on his own up front!!!

Lita,Henri Camara (a bit hit and miss but will be on the cheap), Maynard (crewe - would be good from the bench),Nilmar - quality brazilian striker - i'd say check him out on tube but I've stopped doing that since braaten. anyone else got any suggestions

Did you notice the massive crowds in the lower leagues over the weekend.
30,OOO + at Wednesday ,Leeds and Southampton.
25,000 + at a host of other grounds up and down the country.
Everyone with an electric atmosphere, with fans going wild at both ends of the tables.
Hillsborough was a cauldron of noise, just like St Marys.
Massive pitch invasions everywhere.
We get one fan on the pitch showing a bit of passion and he gets arrested.
The atmosphere was good,but.....yet again we cant fill the Reebok for a game of such importance.
If they give season tickets away next season we still would not fill it every week, and some would still come on here complaining.

I think certain people have short memories. Does no-one remember the yo-yo years when Big Sam first took over the club?
I like Gary Megson even if some people don't (Dioufy probably falls into that category,) and I think he should be given a chance. He's done a good job since Sammy Lee left and people need to look at the statistics before they criticise.
I for one am a happy wanderer and it would be the icing on the cake if the team give the soft southern shandy drinking pooftas a spanking on saturday.
COME ON YOU WHITES!!

I can understand peoples negative attitude towards BWFC at the moment but cannot understand people who come on here and say "ive been watching Bolton 30+ years but i'm not going next season because of...."
You choose your team for whatever reason and should stick with them through thick and thin. No matter what division, no matter what chairman, manager, or owners.
Megson, Gartside, Davies, and the players will always come and go but true fans will be there for a lifetime..

well done lads, the last 4 games were massive and you pulled 10 points out of the bag! bring on chelsea!
as for the winging bolton fans, give megson a chance now he has done what he had to do when confidence was down and secured us, if we are in a dog fight come october then get shut but if not get behind him!
as far as diouf is concerned he has been a good player but not amazing, 5 mil let him go.
and the dead wood such as campo, stelios and jussi they will want 30k a week so thats 90k a week saved to get decent younger plasyers in, sign guthrie!
habsi is miles better than jussi!

and the dead wood such as campo, stelios and jussi they will want 30k a week so thats 90k a week saved to get decent younger plasyers in, sign guthrie!
habsi is miles better than jussi!

Bloomin Hell!
For someone who said they weren't bothered what division we would be in, I was mighty nervous on Saturday.
Somehow we managed to survive. Obviously we don't know what went on behind the scenes, but something changed, be it luck, players revolt, inspired management or a bit of all three.
Whatever it was we need to move on from this shambles of a season and regroup in the summer.
It seems plain enough to any fickle fan that we need some goalscorers and a clearout. We have the basis of a team, but need to buy well and get rid of the deadwood.
I would like to see more youngsters given a chance next season, otherwise what is the point of the academy other than to provide players for other clubs.
Whatever happened over the last four games it maybe does prove that luck does even itself out over a season.
Ours just all came in the last 4 games.
Please let's not go down the same route next season. I look forward to seeing who our new signings will be.
As a keeper replacement may I suggest Kaspar Schmeichel. He wants to leave City and would be a good number 2 for Al Habsi, assuming Jussi leaves.

I'll give Mugson a chance Richard, eleven games from now!
We'll be belly up by then, we've no chance of attracting any decent players with his deadworm charisma, not to mention his total lack of nouse.
Habsi only got his chance due to Jussi getting a knock & previous lacklustre efforts, & he put in some great performances to go with his UEFA ones. Now is that great Mugson tactics, I think not!!

putting himself so much in the spotlight when things were going well is a recipe for disaster for any chairman, just look at ridsdale at leeds. if you want to milk the plaudits when everything is going well youve gotta be prepared to take the flak when its not. the best chairmen are the ones you never even hear about

Im still not convinced by megson one bit!
compare his record this season to steve bruce at wigan, they have got the same ammount of points but bruce did it in less games. Megson had a much stronger squad including a world class striker in anelka - bruce had marcus bent the reject! Megson spent alot more than him as well!
For bolton to move forward we need someone who is forward thinking like sam was to do better than teams around us that spend big year on year!
I feel this is a false oasis and come september the ropes will be out again and somone will be swinging from the town hall steps!
JUST MY OPINION!!!

Lets give Megson a chance brigade is all well and good but what has he done to deserve a chance. He makes more gaffs than Boris Johnson he continues to be more negative than any manager we have had in the last twenty years plus. We have just secured our stay in the premiership by the skin of our teeth with more luck than good management with our worst points tally in years and for our wonderful manager to praise him on the job he has done in amassing 31 points from 27 games. What an achievement we have in staying in a division in which we have made our home for the last 7 years. The players must have realized the serious financial costs of relegation in respect of their wages and put a little effort in and also rode their luck against Spurs and Boro yet we say Megson is the man. He plays Cohen and Rasiak over players with better credentials and we want this man to use our entire transfer kitty with his signings. Out of three signings with costs over 12M we have one very good player and one with a potential to be a good player and the jury is out on the third. The other two signings were dross yet he continued to play them. Now that the end of the season is nigh we will get our board coming out with empty pledges on the amount we will spend and back the squad while the Season tickets are being sold and our fans are so fickle they will buy them even though they have been caught out year in year out. We will be linked to players that will not emerge at our ground all for the ginger numpty to confess that we cannot attract the top players to the Reebok. All the fans celebrated the fact we avoided relegation for what to be in the same position next year with the negative one and all the cups given away cheaply. I for one will not renew and will only go to the away games until he and Gartside are removed.

Not that I want us to lose to Chelsea and would be happy to end on a high(?) but to see Man U throw it all away on the last game of the season would be brilliant! Yes, I know I shouldn't be looking forward to that but we have to take whatever good points we can from this awful season!

Might still be worth signing him as he's only a young lad but at the minute, I feel he is a comodity that we could do without. I'd much rather use the money to sign Zoltan Gera from WBA, he'd fit in perfectly to our midfield!
Job number 1 is to get 2, if not 3 strikers on board! Not really seen much of this St Etienne striker who we are being linked with, personally I'd love to see Cisse at Bolton.

Well I knew it wouldn't last. For a minute there I actually thought I was on a post where people were happy and proud of the team for banding together and pulling away from of the relegation threesome.
We had talk of next year.
New signings.
Who should be captain.
Even praise for Megson and Gartside.
Too good to last though . . . shame.
Take into consideration the words of Kevin Keegan after the loss to Chelsea. He spoke about the ever-widening rift between the top four and the rest and backed it by pointing to the ridiculous gap in points this year.
ManU and Chelsea at 84
Arsenal on 80
drop 7 to Pool (73)
drop 9 to the Toffees (62)
A 22 point gap from fifth to the top
51 points to the relegation zone (33)
And a whopping 73 between first and last.
This gap could hardly get any bigger and until we employ a salary cap or some such means of controlling the amount of cash teams can spend we will never be able to look forward to any sort of competition for the league title.
FAITH KEPT!
RANT ENDED!

Hierro, his wages are over 95,000 per week and his goal bonus is more than 10,000 per goal. His champions league bonus is 100k per match and his monies for retaining the league go up so how can we compete(a relegation battle and time off in cup matches)

its a good job the players and management responded in positive fashion..
If it was a team full of some of the doom and gloom merchants who post comments on here we would have been dead and buried now...

I want Chelsea to win 1-0 and hope Wigan play to the standard they have produced in the last few weeks.
I am sure Mr Bruce will make a rousing pre match team talk and inspire the lads to.....er... defeat.
On second thoughts I want Bolton to win 1-0 and end Chelseas home record.
See you at the Bridge.

Hierro the figures are in EUROS however, we still cannot compete.
who would eve have thought that Nicolas Anelka would be a Bolton Wanderers player, getting someone like Baptista should be a piece of cake if we could get the tranfer fee down, granted we've got a different manager now and don't have our spell of being the 5th most consistent prem team over the last 4 years, you're right we've no chance of signing him - let's go for Michael Boulding at Mansfield - he should be cheap.

Hallelujah!!
Common sense post at last.
Everyone knows Megson is the worst manager we have ever had so why should he be given more time to cause even more damage.
Replace him with either a young up and coming manager, eg Paul Ince or John Collins, or someone with experience, Sven will be out of work soon, or even Steve McClaren, plenty of prem experience, won Boro a Cup, took them to UEFA Cup final and brought through a stream of good young players through the academy.
Any of the above would be 100 times better than Megson

There would be a good chance of getting players to sign and that would be to have an high profile manager like paul ince, george graham and the like namely someone who is recoginsed for their class.

Bit of credit where it's due, he's kept us up and signed a couple of decent players; which is more than can be said about any of those other two clowns!
