Great Manchester Run: Traffic advice
The BUPA Great Manchester Run 2008 on Sunday will cause severe traffic problems in the city from early in the morning.
Greater Manchester Police have issued the folowing advice for motorists:
The race at 9.45am from Portland Street near to its junction with Oxford Street in the city centre and comprises a route out of the city into Trafford and Salford before returning into Manchester City centre to finish on Deansgate by the Hilton Hotel. A number of road closures will be in operation from 4.30am.
A major event for Manchester, the 10 km run, with 31,000 participants is one of the biggest 10km runs in the world.
Thousands of extra visitors will enjoy a warm Manchester welcome when they arrive in the city, and people are advised to plan their journeys carefully and to be prepared to change their normal routines.
Greater Manchester Police seek to ensure that the event is a positive safe experience for runners and spectators whilst causing minimal inconvenience to residents, businesses and motorists.
People should consider the following:
1. To view the event or to visit adjacent areas, plan ahead and allow yourself plenty of journey time.
2. If you are not intending to view the run, consider a route in and out of the city to avoid the event or altering your journey time.
3. If you intend to use buses that travel on the route of the run, please check with the bus operator or bus advice lines for any service route amendments.
Police will start to remove restrictions on the route as soon as the runners have cleared, which is expected to be around 12.45pm and all roads to be re-opened by 3:45pm.
