At first glance you might not recognise what effectively appears to be a giant hole in the ground but this photo from January 1988 shows the foundations going in for one of Bolton’s fondest remembered leisure facilities.
The Dawes Street complex would become home to The Water Place, the much-lamented leisure pool which boasted two water flumes, a wave machine, a café and even some flying elephants.
The £5.8million centre was officially opened by the Queen in December that year and served the town until 2002.
The Water Place was demolished and the site is now partly occupied by Morrison’s and car parks.
