When this photo was taken in June 1987, conservationists were battling to save this Bolton church from the bulldozers.
St Mary’s RC Church on Palace Street was due to close in July and the Salford Diocese had applied for a demolition order not wanting the building to be left empty and fall into disrepair.
But The Victorian Society was urging councillors to refuse the application. The society said it feared “irreversible damage being done to an historic part of Bolton”.
The good news, the church was saved as is now the restaurant for the Holiday Inn.
